“I did it for Daniel.”

I did it for DanielACLT (African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust) co-founder Orin Lewis OBE became one of the millions of people participating in the Virgin Money London Marathon in memory of his son Daniel De-Gale on Sunday 24 April.

Daniel captured the hearts of the nation when he appeared on the national news, aged six, as the first black individual in the UK to receive a life-saving stem cell (bone marrow) transplant from an unrelated donor in 1999. Although he beat his fight against leukaemia, Daniel died in October 2008 from multiple organ failure. His legacy is ACLT, which was founded by his parents Orin and Beverley De-Gale OBE. ACLT strives to increase the number of ethnic minorities on the UK stem cell (bone marrow), blood and organ donor registers.

The registers provide a lifeline to those living with blood cancer or other illnesses where a transplant is required to save a life.

This year marks the 20th anniversary since ACLT was founded and Daniel is never far from his parents’ minds.

Orin says: “What an experience of a lifetime! Daniel was the inspiration behind why the ACLT was founded 20 years ago and twenty years on he is the reason I decided to take on the ultimate challenge. I did it for Daniel. I did it to mark ACLT’s 20th anniversary – I am completely overwhelmed. I feel honoured to have received such fantastic support from family, friends and ACLT supporters. I am extremely grateful to all who have donated towards my £20,000 fundraising target.  I still have a little way to go.  Please continue to share my story in the hope further funds can be raised and I exceed my target. Thank you.”

Orin, a first-time marathon runner completed the 26.2 miles in 5 hours and 57 seconds.
